The Wandering Chew: An Iraqi-Jewish Feast (October 5th 2013)

Our friends at The Wandering Chew have released the menu for their first dinner coming up this Saturday, October 5th at Café Zosha, 5731 Park Ave, Montreal. It looks amazing and space is limited so get your tickets (only $20!!) ASAP.

The dinner will feature dishes collected from the recipe books and memories of Jewish-Iraqi women living in Montreal.They met with Roots & Recipes featured grandmother Evette Mashal among others to come up with the menu, and will be serving the almond cookies (Hadji Bada or Massafan) that are the star of our next Dishing up the Past Episode.

Here’s the delicious menu for Saturday’s dinner!!

Starters

Pickled Turnips
Olives
Bread

Lemonade cocktail
Flavored with orange blossom water, fresh mint and rose petals

Appetizer

Sambusak
Turnover filled with curried chickpeas and onions
Served with a dipping sauce

First Course

Engreeyeh
Sweet and sour eggplant
Cooked in a sauce of onions, tomatoes, sugar and lemon
Served with crispy Iraqi rice

Second Course

Kubbeh
Rice flour dumplings stuffed with beef and parsley
Or
Semolina and Rice flour dumplings stuffed with onions and mushrooms
Both served in a seasonal pumpkin stew

Dessert

Muhallabi
Almond milk pudding flavored with cardamom, rosewater and vanilla
Garnished with pistachios and cardamom

Hadji Bada
Almond cookies flavored with cardamom and rosewater

Fresh Mint Tea
