Episode 3: Grandma Hazel’s Poppyseed Cake with Custard Filling and Caramel Icing
When Grandma Clara turned 95, her daughter Hazel and granddaughter Cheryl prepared the family’s’ time-honored poppy seed cake for the celebration. It was Clara’s husband Sam’s favourite cake that she baked every year for his birthday, so it was fitting that Clara’s family chose to prepare this same cake honoring his memory.
In this episode of ‘Dishing Up the Past’ the poppy seed cake is passed down to yet another generation as Grandma Hazel and Cheryl teach Cheryl’s son Dan how to bake the cake. Along the way they discuss the important roles food and cooking have played in their family’s story – and why this ‘secret’ recipe may not be so secret after all.
